Five Points Man Perishes In Farming Accident
A farming accident in the Five Points community resulted in the death of a Gamble Road resident Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department received the call to a hay field off Second Creek Road shortly before 5:00 p.m. When they arrived on the scene, deputies report that members of the Lawrence County Ambulance Service and Center Point and Southeast Fire Departments were already administering medical assistance.
Witness Brian Scott Gamble, age 29, of 51 Gamble Road, told deputies that the accident had occurred while he and his father were heading into a hay field.
Brian Gamble stated that they had planned to roll some hay before church that evening. Brian Gamble was driving a tractor that pulled the hay rake, while his father, 53-year-old John Paul Gamble of 63 Gamble Road, was driving a tractor that pulled a hay baler.
In the lead, Brian stated that they were pulling through a gate leading into the hayfield when the hay rake became hung up on the gate. When he looked back, he told deputies, his father was attempting to jump onto his moving tractor. His attempt failed, however, and the tractor reportedly ran over the length of Paul Gamble’s body.
Brian Gamble indicated he quickly jumped off his own tractor and ran to render aid to his father. He told deputies that he performed CPR and believed that his father had, at first, attempted to breath. His efforts, however, were unsuccessful. He stated that “All he could do was hold him.”
Deputies discovered a small amount of blood on the ground just outside the gate, a pair of sunglasses, and a small trail of blood that lead to the body – consistent with the described accident.
A native of Lawrence County and employee of Southern Craft Manufacturing, Gamble served on the board of Tennessee Valley Livestock, the election committee of Southeast Fire Department, and as deacon and song leader at Five Points Church of Christ.
Survivors include wife Connie Lee Gamble, sons Brian and Todd Gamble, parents Wallace and Flora Poe Gamble, and sister Carol Snook, all of Five Points.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday through Neal Funeral Home.
